Art Journal note
For this page, to accompany this verse, I’ve used a beautiful magazine image of hands holding earth, and also a headline which I had cut out which says ‘handmade’. I also used a hand-cut stencil I had made to represent me(!) and stencilled this over the earth with a gold gel pen.
Tip – keep a small stash of images cut or ripped from magazines, to rummage through until you find a good match. Also words and headlines can work well too.
For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Ephesians 2v10 (NIV)
This lovely verse tells us that we are God’s masterpiece, created with a purpose. It speaks of God our creator, who has made us in His image with a job to do. I’ve just finished reading the fantastic book by Emily Freeman “A Million Little Ways” where she fully explores this verse and brings it to life. Emily explains how the original word for “masterpiece” or “workmanship” is the Greek word “poema” from which we get the word poem. I love how we are God’s poem, written with the sole purpose of glorifying God – that’s our job!
When walking at lunchtime today down by the lake, I was struck by the way the water reflects the sky, and changes constantly as the clouds move and light changes. The water is rich with different shades of so many colours, light bounces off the surface in dappled wavelets in the breeze. Reflecting the glory of the sky above.
God has written each of us as a poem. Let’s reflect the glory of God, our creator, in our lives!
Heavenly Father, thank you that I am fearfully and wonderfully made in your image, as a poem. You have made me completely unique, and know my DNA, my fingerprints and how many hairs are on my head. Help me to grow in depth of knowledge of You, and to discover more of all You have created me to be. And in all aspects of my life that you have called me to be and to do, may my life be a reflection of your glory.
In Jesus name, Amen.
