Today I’m sharing something that I painted this afternoon (though not in my art journal for a change!). Just a simple little watercolour painting of a sparrow and the wonderful words of Jesus:
“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”
Matthew 10 v 29-31
The thought that God knows what every sparrow in the world is up to, is incredible. I remember hearing the Bible teacher David Pawson explain that when Jesus talks about sparrows falling to the ground, He isn’t talking about sparrows dying dramatically, but the Greek word for ‘falls’ actually means more like ‘hops’. Not one sparrow ‘will hop to the ground outside your Father’s care’. I like this explanation a lot more! It also makes sense, in the context of being in the Father’s care.
Jesus tells us this to remind us how intimately God is involved with his creation. He has not just created the universe, set everything up, and left us to our own devices. He knows when a sparrow hops to the ground. He knows how many hairs are on my head!
We really don’t need to be afraid, or to worry, when Almighty God – our creator – knows us and cares for us so tenderly.
Heavenly Father, thank you for your tender care for me. Thank you that you are aware of all that is going on in this world, and in my life, and that you care. Help me not to be afraid, and not to worry, but to trust you more and more each day.
In Jesus name, Amen.
